I know, I know, I have this thing for train stations, but the Berlin Hauptbahnhof has just shot up to Number One on my list of favorites. The station is a work of art, constructed out of thousands of glass panes. A glass building of any kind is strictly verboten in California where our buildings float atop a grid of fault lines.
For me the glass panes symbolize a window to the world. Trains were arriving from Paris, Vienna and Warsaw. Trains were leaving for Krakow, Budapest and Prague. Where should I go next? I ask myself that question every single day.
