Shearling Country
I read recently that for every person living in New Zealand, there are nine sheep. The country is known for its wool and meat production and when visiting the South Island, sheep are everywhere! Around every corner, every valley and every store (sheepskin pelts, that is). More than half of the sheep here are found on the South Island and the Romney, as seen above, is the major New Zealand breed.
Shearling is sheep's wool cut to a uniform depth. It usually has leather or sueded leather on one side and comes and goes as a fashion trend. For us California gals, our beloved ugg-type boots, however, will never go out of style. We don't care what the fashion pundits say! The sheepskin lining serves as a wick to sop up that cold Pacific moisture. They are toasty and warm and dare I say, comfortable as all get out! Check out the new Spring line from Uggs. Mimi is trying to talk me into buying the lime green ones to go with a Betty Page black and white swimsuit I just bought. Leave it to her to come up with imaginative combinations!
