I probably could have skipped this one, but being a good tourist, I took my travel buddy by the hand and trudged up the hill to see it. It's tall, I'll grant you that. At 173 ft., it can boast a record-making height. But, in my humble opinion, that's about it. It's skinny, weathered and frankly, kind of ugly. The other (shorter) totem poles in the town of Alert Bay were far more interesting.
The painted Long House next to it and the carved wooden eagle were much more artistic.
"Are we finally done with totems?" My travel buddy asked. He had plopped down on a bench, exhausted from walking all over Cormorant Island.
"For now." I didn't dare tell him that Ketchican, Alaska, was now on my "Must See" list. And . . . there were still a lot of totems up and down British Columbia I hadn't seen yet. But I knew to keep quiet. "Shall we hit the pub?"
He smiled. "Now, you're talking."
I guess the World's Tallest Totem Pole would be my last.
For now.
