Sognefjord - One of the World's Longest Fjords

Sognefjord is Norway's longest fjord and one of the longest fjords in the world. It lies in the heart of the Norwegian fjord county called Fjord Norway where it carves its way from the coast to the mighty mountains of the Jotunheimen National Park and the blue ice of the Jostedalsbreen National Park. Sognefjord extends more than 200 km inland to the innermost small village of Skjolden.

In Norway alone there are dozens upon dozens of fjords. The reason that Sognefjord stands out is that it is the largest fjord in the country. Sognefjord is also the deepest fjord in Norway. It reaches a maximum depth of more than 1,300 meters below sea level and the mountains along the fjord rise to more than 1,700 meters.

Every arm of the long Sognefjord has its own name. The most narrow and famous fjord arm, the Nærøyfjord, is only 250 meters wide at its most narrow. Other picturesque and well-known fjord arms are Lusterfjord, Fjærlandsfjord and Finnafjord. These fjords often have a beautiful emerald green color because of the melt water from the glaciers.

Sognefjord is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is undoubtedly the most attractive tourist spot in Norway. The fjord has become a tourist attraction with summer tourists being an important part of the local economy. It is difficult to take in just how naturally stunning and expansive Sognefjord is without actually being there.
