A Yangtze River Cruise

We float down the Yangtze River
passed pagodas and temples
and deserted homes.
The faces in the limestone mountains
implore us to never forget them.

The water turns from brown to jade
to emerald green
the deeper we penetrate the Lesser Gorge.
This is a land consumed by spirits,
blessed by a goddess,
and protected by a dragon.

"Are your parents saddened by having to leave their home?"
I ask our guide.
"No way.  They're happy.  They have
new bigger modern house now."
Our cruise ends and all of us,
tourists and natives alike,
are silenced by the roar of
The Three Gorges Dam.
