The Carmel Mission was founded in 1770. For the traveler on the mission pilgrimage, it is a "must see" because Father Junipero Serra is buried here. He was founder of many of the California missions and served as their "Father Presidente". He died in 1784 at the age of 70, and was beatified by Pope Paul II in 1988.
