The men in my family have always worn Hugo Boss sport coats and suits. They are beautifully made and last, well, a lifetime. This spring I ventured for the first time into the women's side of a Hugo Boss store, and ended up purchasing this color block summer dress. The black silk addition to the hemline clinched the sale.
The history of Hugo Boss is an interesting one. He began his clothing company in 1924, in a small town south of Stuttgart, Germany. He joined the Nazi party and consequently supplied uniforms to the Germans during World War II. Evidently, he used both prisoners of war and forced laborers to meet the growing demand. This came to light when Hugo Boss' name appeared on a list of dormant Swiss bank accounts and the company, since then, has pledged to reimburse the injured parties.
Hugo Boss died in 1948, and of course, the company is now a huge corporation, far removed from its origins. I bought this dress at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. But come to think of it, the "khaki" color does remind me of a uniform--only belonging to the Foreign Legion!
