A Room with a View
We walked into the lobby of the Hotel Gendarm in Berlin looking bedraggled and depressed. We had spent the whole day traveling back from Prague. We would be leaving for California the next day. Could we possibly stay another week? Take the train to Krakow? Pretty please.
"Ah, Richard and Marea, welcome back," the young woman at the desk said, greeting us with a big smile. "The hotel is full so we have upgraded your room."
Upgraded your room. This turned out to be the understatement of the year. As soon as we opened the door to the suite on the top floor, we gasped. I swear we had died and gone to heaven. We didn't go out at all that night--just sat out on the smoking balcony, wrapped up in blankets and drinking wine. Thank you, Hotel Gendarm!
