Catavina Cave Paintings

If you're traveling down the Baja Peninsula, these beautiful cave paintings are easily accessible.  Just before Catavina at KM 176, there is a parking lot and a trail that leads up to this cave.  Although historians are reluctant to give details of the paintings' origins, they were probably painted by the Cochimis 1,000 years ago.  No one knows for certain what the paintings depict, but the paint was made from local minerals.  The minerals were pulverized and then mixed with the sap from cactus.  That they have been preserved all these years under these rock hangings and that any old Tom, Dick or Harry can see them, seems incredible to me.
