Grand Palace of Bangkok - Thailand's Most Recognizable Landmark

The Grand Palace of Bangkok is one of the most illustrious buildings in the whole of Thailand. It is a dazzling and spectacular palace and undoubtedly the most famous structure in Bangkok. Since the founding of Bangkok, the Grand Palace has been the major architectural symbol of the Thai Royal Family. It is a regular venue for important state and religious functions.

Located next to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand's most majestic and recognizable landmark used to be the main residence of precious monarchs. Construction of the Grand Palace began on 6 May 1782 and has been expanded massively over the past two centuries. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Thailand since 1782.

The Grand Palace has an area of 218,400 square meters and is surrounded by walls built in 1782. Grand Palace is still used for official events. It hosts several royal ceremonies and state functions within the walls of the palace every year. It is the chosen place for both weddings and funerals within the royal family.

The Grand Palace is made up of numerous buildings, halls, pavilions set around open lawns, gardens and courtyards. It is beautiful as an entire complex particularly because of its golden roofs. But it is the Wat Phra Kaew temple that is often seen as the palace's most beautiful section.
