The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a conservation area located in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. It was established in 1959 for multiple uses as a biodiversity conservation landscape. It was designated to promote the conservation of natural resources, safeguard the interests of NCA indigenous residents and promote tourism. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers an area of 8,292 square kilometers.


The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater. It is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Ngorongoro Crater regarded as one of the seven natural wonders of Africa. Ngorongoro Crater is 600 meters deep. It hosts the most unique ecosystem on Earth with 20,000 large grazing mammals and the largest concentration of predators on Earth.


Among other important features of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area include - the Serengeti Plains that support about 2 millions migratory wildlife species, the Northern Highland Forest Reserve, the archaeological and paleontological site located at Oldupai Gorge and the early human foot-prints that were discovered at Alaitole in Ngarusi area. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a World Heritage site.
