Hofuf Caves

Hofuf is a city in eastern Saudi Arabia located in one of the largest oases in the world.  It is a leading producer of dates.  Outside the city, however, is a fascinating cave system with colorful rocks in the most amusing shapes.  This area is called Jabal Al-Qara but we westerners like to call it, "Ali Baba."  Potters have lived inside the caves for centuries using the clay to make their beautiful unglazed pots.
I'm happy to see that Saudi Arabia is finally allowing tourists into their country.  There are still many restrictions.  Its history, its culture and its present-day importance to the world economy, make it a great destination and worth the effort in trying to get a visa.
